Why 6C?

Based on studies done by youth development experts, there are 6 crucial assets that form a foundation for positive youth development which helps young people achieve effectiveness in all areas of their lives including academic performance, emotional and physical well-being, and career aspirations to ultimately become an ideal adult, or in this case, and an effective Global Citizen.

Concept of 6C

Professor Richard M. Lerner is the Director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University. Professor Lerner found the 5Cs to be important qualities for young people growing up into adulthood. These 5Cs are Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring. When a young person develops stronger 5C’s, they tend to result in the 6th C, which is Contribution. This means that the young person is able to have happiness, good social networks, and positively contribute to their family, community, and society.

What is 6C?

Competence
The ability to act effectively in various settings. Encourage young learners to move forward by focusing on their ability to learn, to think, and to act.

Confidence
A positive internal sense of self-worth and ability. Help young learners develop sense of confidence in order for them to bring out their competence and potential.

Contribution
Ability to affect positive changes. This is a natural outcome of the previous 5 C’s. It’s the ability to create good results and benefit for yourself, your family, your community and the society at large.

Character
Understanding of one’s own inner state, personality, values, and morality. Enable young learners to get to know their own personality, find their identity, and learn about their own strengths and areas for development.

Caring
Capacity for empathy and sympathy toward self and others. Caring and being sympathetic play an important role in the social life and ability to live happily with others

Connection
Positive and productive relationships with people and institutions. Young learner will learn how to interact and build strong relationships with other people. They will also learn about the connection between themselves and others, and between themselves and the world.

6C’S LONGITUDINAL RESEARCH

There are several researchers that have conducted studies over the past two decades on the 6Cs of positive youth development to confirm the validity of the 6Cs model. They found that the 5Cs can predict that, over time, a young person’s depression and risk-behaviors will be reduced–while a young person’s contribution to themselves, their family, community, and civil society will be increased. The factors that are promoting these 5Cs are ecological assets, such as social networks and access to resources, combined with the strengths of adolescents of having hopeful future expectations.

IMPLEMENTATION OF 6C’S IN THE REAL WORLD

4H is America’s largest youth development organization that began 100 years ago and currently there are nearly six million young people across the U.S. equipped with the skills to lead for a lifetime. 4-H adopted the ‘Positive Youth Development’ model into their program and conducted a longitudinal study that started in 2002 to help follow up on how the 6C’s of positive youth development create positive learning experiences for children.

From the research started in 2002, they found that children who partake in the 4-H program are:

    • 4x more likely to make contributions to their communities
    • About 2x more likely to be civically active
    • Nearly 2x more likely to participate in science programs during out-of-school time
    • 2x more likely to make healthier choices
